May 20, 2025 – Cooking Lotus Seed, Lily Bulb & Longan Congee for Better Senior Sleep

Past Events

To help seniors enhance their sleep through dietary adjustments, the Association of Certified Professional Nutritionists (ACPN) successfully hosted the themed event “Cooking to Combat Loneliness: Lotus Seed, Lily Bulb & Longan Congee for Senior Sleep Health” in Vaughan. ACPN invited Registered Nutritionist and Canadian College of Public Health lecturer Julia Wong as the keynote speaker. She provided a systematic overview of common senior sleep issues such as difficulty falling asleep, frequent waking, and early rising, explaining key factors such as elevated cortisol levels, magnesium deficiency, and low melatonin production.

Practical Nutrition and Hands-On Experience

During the “Food Therapy for Better Sleep” segment, Julia shared science-backed dietary advice, including reducing caffeine, alcohol, and high-fat/high-sugar foods while increasing foods rich in tryptophan (milk, bananas), magnesium (leafy greens, nuts), and melatonin precursors (cherries, oats). She highlighted the featured congee recipe of lotus seed, lily bulb, and longan for its calming and heart-nourishing properties. The event also included interactive demonstrations led by ACPN Director Maggie Yu, featuring live cooking of the congee, guided acupressure for six key sleep-promoting points, and group practice of abdominal breathing techniques for stress relief.

Comprehensive Sleep Improvement Plan

Julia concluded with a “3-Dimensional Sleep Improvement Plan,” covering dietary strategies (warm congee three hours before bedtime), environmental tips (ideal bedroom temperature, blackout curtains, reduced blue light exposure), and lifestyle habits (consistent bedtime, moderate daily exercise, bedtime rituals). Participants received a specially compiled Sleep Food Therapy Guide with 20 recipes and acupressure charts and expressed enthusiasm to apply what they learned.

The event was funded in part by the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program and aimed to encourage seniors to enhance both their social connections and overall health through nutrition-focused cooking activities.
