On July 22, 2025, the Association of Certified Professional Nutritionists (ACPN) and the Golden Maple Chinese Seniors Association (GMCSA) co-hosted a lively outdoor event at R.K. McMillan Park in Mississauga, partially funded by the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program. Over 100 seniors and community members joined from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM to enjoy a lakeside cooking and barbecue experience celebrating food, friendship, and healthy living. The event opened with warm greetings from ACPN Director Ms. Maggie Yu, who emphasized the theme, “Nourishing Connections to Combat Loneliness by Cooking,” followed by remarks from GMCSA President Ms. Huiping Huang and City of Mississauga representatives, highlighting the importance of shared meals in supporting seniors’ mental and physical well-being.
Participants took part in a health and nutrition lecture by ACPN Senior Registered Nutritionist Ms. Julia Wong, who shared six key dietary principles for healthy aging and practical cooking tips. Seniors and volunteers collaborated in preparing marinated meats, grilling salmon and chicken, and enjoying fresh vegetables while learning strategies to reduce sodium, sugar, and grilling-related health risks. The gathering combined delicious food, cultural performances, and intergenerational conversations, creating a joyful and welcoming atmosphere. Many seniors reported forming new friendships, and GMCSA announced the upcoming launch of a “Taste of Memory” cooking group to continue building community and combat social isolation.
