Winter Neighborhood Gathering — “Warm Dumplings, Warm Hearts”
Dumpling-Making & Senior Wellness Community Event
November 21, 2025 · Vaughan, Ontario
Funded in part by the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program
On November 21, 2025, the Association of Certified Professional Nutritionists (ACPN), together with the International Culture Federation (ICF), hosted a heart-warming community gathering titled “Winter Neighborhood Gathering: Warm Dumplings, Warm Hearts.”
The event took place at Improve Canada (7250 Keele St, Vaughan, ON), and brought together residents, seniors, and community partners for an enriching afternoon of nutrition learning, cultural performances, hands-on cooking, and joyful social interaction. This event was part of ACPN’s Nourishing Connections to Combat Loneliness by Cooking series, with partial support from the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program.

Inspiring Opening Remarks
The gathering opened in a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
A respected senior representative, Mr. Zhao, delivered heartfelt remarks on community life, healthy aging, and the meaning of staying connected—his words deeply resonated with many seniors in attendance.
Nutrition Talk: The Secrets to Healthy Eating
The educational portion of the event featured Maggie Yu, Board Member of ACPN, who presented a practical and engaging session titled “Secrets of Healthy Eating for Seniors.”
Ms. Yu highlighted how physiological changes in older adults make nutrition especially crucial for maintaining quality of life. Her talk covered key principles of senior-friendly eating, including:
-
Eating small, frequent meals
-
Choosing softer-textured foods
-
Reducing salt and sugar
-
Drinking enough water daily
-
Increasing variety and quality of ingredients
-
Ensuring strict attention to food safety
She also introduced the Healthy Nutrition Plate, guiding participants on how to balance carbohydrates, dietary fiber, colourful vegetables and fruits, high-quality proteins, and Omega-3–rich foods. The session provided seniors with easy, actionable strategies to support daily well-being.
Cultural Performances: A Joyful Interlude
The event then transitioned into a delightful cultural performance segment.
Beautiful songs, graceful dancing, and uplifting performances filled the venue with applause and laughter, bringing the community closer together and adding a festive touch to the afternoon.
Hands-On Activity: Dumplings & Community Connection
The final part of the event—the “Warm Dumplings, Warm Hearts” cooking workshop—brought everyone together in meaningful interaction.
Participants naturally formed into two activity groups:
Group 1: Dumpling Making
Residents collaborated on every step of traditional dumpling preparation:
kneading dough, chopping and seasoning fillings, rolling wrappers, folding dumplings, and cooking together.
The aroma of freshly cooked dumplings filled the air as conversations flowed and friendships formed.
Group 2: Social Games
Another group enjoyed relaxed and lively card games, creating a cheerful and stress-free atmosphere for socializing.
The combination of food, connection, and shared joy truly embodied the spirit of community health and engagement.
Event Impact
The “Winter Neighborhood Gathering – Warm Dumplings, Warm Hearts” event succeeded in blending nutrition education with cultural expression and interactive cooking.
It offered seniors not only practical health knowledge, but also emotional warmth, companionship, and a vibrant sense of belonging.
Through delicious food and meaningful connection, the event highlighted ACPN’s commitment to promoting senior wellness, reducing loneliness, and strengthening community life.
