Nourishing Connections to Combat Loneliness by Cooking

On Friday, December 12, 2025, the Association of Certified Professional Nutritionists (ACPN) successfully hosted the Winter BBQ & Family Cooking Showcase at the Vaughan Woodbridge Senior Activity Centre, bringing together seniors, families, and community members for an engaging afternoon of food, movement, and social connection.

This event was part of ACPN’s “Nourishing Connections to Combat Loneliness by Cooking” initiative, which focuses on promoting mental well-being, healthy aging, and social engagement through practical nutrition education and shared cooking experiences.

Nutrition, Community, and Well-Being in Action

Participants enjoyed a hands-on cooking and tasting experience featuring winter-friendly comfort foods such as BBQ chicken wings, corn, and sweet potatoes—foods selected for their balance of protein, fiber, and micronutrients, while remaining familiar and enjoyable for older adults and families.

ACPN Registered Professional Nutritionists guided discussions around:

• Balanced meal composition

• Seasonal eating for winter wellness

• The role of shared meals in emotional and mental health

• Practical strategies for maintaining healthy eating habits at home

Beyond nutrition education, the event encouraged participants to interact, cook together, and share personal stories, reinforcing the idea that food is both nourishment and a powerful social connector.

Addressing Loneliness Through Cooking

Social isolation remains a growing concern among seniors. By combining nutrition education with group activities, cultural exchange, and light physical movement, the Winter BBQ & Family Cooking Showcase created a warm, inclusive environment that supported both physical health and emotional well-being.

Many participants expressed appreciation for the welcoming atmosphere, the opportunity to reconnect with others, and the practical nutrition insights they could apply in daily life.
