2026.01.07 A Warm New Year Gathering with a Sushi Rice Balls Workshop, Performances, and Card Games

Past Events

On January 7, 2026, ACPN successfully hosted a New Year Sushi Rice Balls Community Gathering in Markham, bringing together community members for an afternoon of food, connection, and shared joy. The event was part of ACPN’s ongoing commitment to community health, social connection, and healthy aging, and was funded in part by the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program.

🍣 Hands-On Cooking, Shared Experiences

The event opened with a Sushi Rice Balls Workshop led by Instructor Sun, where participants learned simple, practical techniques for preparing sushi-style rice balls. Designed for all skill levels, the workshop emphasized hands-on participation, cooperation, and conversation—transforming cooking into a collective and enjoyable experience.

💬 Connection Beyond the Table

Following the workshop, participants shared the meal they prepared together, creating a warm and welcoming space for conversation and laughter. Community members also took part in informal talent sharing, including singing and light performances, adding creativity and personal expression to the gathering.

🎴 Relaxation, Games & New Year Cheer

The afternoon continued with casual New Year card games, offering a relaxed way for participants to socialize, reduce winter isolation, and strengthen community bonds in a friendly environment.

💛 Program Impact

By combining nutrition education, hands-on food preparation, and social engagement, this event supported both physical nourishment and emotional well-being. It reflects ACPN’s holistic approach to health—recognizing that meaningful connection, shared activities, and inclusive spaces are essential components of healthy aging.

ACPN extends heartfelt thanks to all participants, volunteers, and partners who helped make this New Year gathering a memorable and meaningful experience. We look forward to continuing to create opportunities that bring people together through food, learning, and community.
